The Ui-Fidhghenti (descendants of Fiachra Fidhghenti) were part of the Eoganachta, or Eugenians, who ruled Munster and traced their lineage from Eogan Mor, who was of the line of Eber. The Cleirchen (Clerkins) were a sept of the Ui-Fidhghenti whose territory coincided largely with the modern county of Limerick. There were O'Clerkins also, who are said to have been followers of the Three Collas and to have gone with them to Scotland and then to have returned to Ireland in the fourth century, according to Matheson in Report on Surnames in Ireland
.

Other families of the Ui Fidgheinte, besides the O'Clerkins, according to O'Keefe were the O'Hares, O'Collins, O'Kenneallys, O'Brouder (Broderick) and the O'Donovans, who came to be the dominant sept in the territory, following the O'Clerkins as chieftains or kings.
