Hugh Clarkin

Hugh was born about 1847 in County Monaghan. His mother & father were Mary (nee McMahon) and John Clerkin.   Hugh left Gravesend on the 10th November 1863 and arrived Brisbane Australia on the Clipper the "Flying Cloud" on the 19th February 1864. I believe that no passenger list for this trip is available in Australia.
If anyone should know of a list for this trip please contact me.

A transcript from the Brisbane Newspaper of the day is included in this web site.

A Land Order  was issued to him and a Miles McHugh on the 28 June 1864. The Land Order was delivered on the 20 July 1864 to a Geo Layton. The land order makes reference to the Clipper the "Flying Cloud"

Hugh married  Elizabeth Jane Toms in 1873. In 15th February 1877 Hugh bought (with a 2 pound deposit) 20 perch block of land at lot 17 Abbott Street Cairns for 6 pound 5 shillings. The first appearance of Hugh's name on the Electoral Roll was in the District of Cook on 29th December 1877. Only men who owned land were allowed to vote in those times.

Hugh's occupation is listed as Miner. It is known that he work as a miner in the Port Douglas area in 1882.  He was the lease holder in a Tin Mine named the Poor Stroller in the Tinaroo District, from 1884 to 1886. It was the Herberton Mineral lease No 183 and the schedule of Land reads as follows:
Proclaimed Mining District of Tinaroo, Parish of Herberton, County of Cardwell, District of Kennedy "The Poor Stroller" Area: Ten acres
Commencing in the east corner of Mineral Lease No 6 and bounded thence on the south east by a line bearing 39* 22' 12 chains, on the north east by a line bearing 309*22' 8 Chains and 33 links, on the north west by a line bearing 219* 22' 12 chains, and on the south west by a line bearing 129* 22' 8 chains and 33 links to the point of commencement, exclusive of surface rights shown on the plan.

According to the Electoral Roll Hugh also lived in Charters Towers from 1893 to 1895. It is unclear when he died, and it is not known where his is buried. No further records have been found in Queensland for Hugh after this time to date. Can anyone help solve the mystery of what happened to Hugh?

Their children were John William Clarkin, b: 18 May 1875, Charles Henry Clarkin, b: Abt February 1877, Catherine (Dolly) Clarkin b: 20 February 1879, Elizabeth Jane (Lizzie) Clarkin b: 15 June 1882, Emily Ellen Clarkin, b: 16 March 1884, Joseph Clarkin, b: 1 July 1888. Many of their descendants have recently been traced.  But I am still looking for a few Names:  Coupland, Valon, and Wells. Can you help? I am also looking for Hugh's Irish ancestors.
